This latest light from the Magicshine stable is this 1000 lumens MJ-868. The Cree XM-L LED produces a massive 1000 lumens controlled beam. Anyone new to high power bike lights can't fail to be impressed. The lightset is housed in a tough aluminium case which also features a double sided, anti-reflective, optical toughened lens to optimise the beam pattern. The design is the very lastest model from Magicshine with a smooth, aerodynamic design for maximum windflow and colling effect.

The MJ-868 is a 3 mode lamp with the switch very easy to see and reach on the top of the light head. The battery indicator (5 stage) is also easily visible.

 

Mounting

 

Mounting the light couldn't be easier. The tried and tested 'O' ring system hook the light on to the bars front and rear. Different size 'O' rings are provided for oversize bars.

 

Battery

 

In the same way, the battery can be attached to the downtube using the tough velcro strips on the battery bag. The battery itself is a 4 cell Samsung Lithium Ion battery rated at 5.6Ah and we estimate the run time to be around 3 hrs 30 minutes. This comes with full safety protection against overheating and is waterproof. The battery bag is improved to provide even greater protection.

Very well made wee light which looks robust, nice battery pack with soft cover which straps securely to top tube of frame. Mounting to the bars can move over rough ground so a fixed handle bar mount would be nice. Main beam is as bright as a car, nicely focused so that you can see potholes or the trail. Dipped beam is usable even on unlit roads and off road at slower speeds. My only reservation is the battery life i have not had anything like the stated 3.5 hours, goes to half battery life in less than an hour. Havent run it until it goes flat but i cant see it getting 3.5 hours at that discharge rate. Would certainly recommend this light but if you want to use it for extended time on full power i would have a back up battery. Posted on 22/11/2011 10:27:00
