It’s safe to say that autumn is well and truly upon us and here at Magicshine UK we want to help you stay on two wheels well through the winter.

It’s cold, it’s wet, the days are shorter, but you shouldn’t let that stop you enjoying what you do best! After this summer’s washout, riding in autumn can’t be much worse anyway; it’s all we know but to ride in these conditions!

Below are just a few tips we’ve put together so you can make the most out of your rides this autumn:

Light Up

Fit powerful front lights and rear lights, and if you think it is necessary, add a helmet light. This will improve your own vision and increase your visibility so other road users can clearly see you.

Wear the Right Clothing

Wear a good quality lightweight base layer, wind/waterproof gloves and if necessary, take a waterproof jacket with you. If you’re riding after dark or in poor light, reflective clothing is extremely effective too.

Plan Before all your Rides

Autumn can bring unpredictable weather conditions so it is essential that you plan ahead before setting off. Plan your route and any alternatives, check the expected weather and whilst you’re out, be aware of your surroundings.

Maintain your Bike and Lights

When the weather throws dirt and water at your bike, make sure you clean all important parts well with proper bike cleaning products and keep on top of it regularly. Regularly clean your lights free of any dirt and ensure your battery is always fully charged.

Invest in Some Mudguards

A good set of clip-on mudguards will avoid any water and mud flicking up onto your face and body, leaving you wet and dirty before you’ve even started your ride!

Ride Carefully and Take Care

Wet leaves and slippery surfaces make for dangerous rides so just make sure you take your time, ride consistently, take sharp bends with caution and avoid puddles and pot holes.

Make it Exciting!

Spend a weekend in a national park or choose a dedicated cycling trail and enjoy the warm colours of autumn. If you’re really keen, set your alarm an hour early than normal and head out for a ride before work. You’ll find that the roads/trails are much quieter and the crisp morning air will wake you up and leave you fresh for the day ahead!
