Battery Storage Guide

With summer just around the corner and the nights becomming ever shorter, you may not need your bike lights again until later in the year.  A little bit of preparation now, will make all the difference come the Autumn when those dark nights sneak around again.

Step One

Clean your light.  Over the years I've found that a clean dry tooth brush is the best way to get rid of any mud or debris from your lightset.  It's a good idea at this point to check your battery bag for wear and tear and replace it if necessary.  Remember a damp battery bag is bound to rot over the summer.

Step Two

Disconnect the battery from the lighthead. Check the cables for wear and tear, make sure they are free from mud and are perfectly dry.  If you leave the battery connected to the lighthead you may find it impossible to recharge your battery in the Autumn due to the battery entering a state of deep discharge. Disconnect it now!

Step Three

Fully charge the battery.  The suggested amount of charge, when leaving your battery out of use for a significant amount of time is 40%.  Personally, I would fully charge any Lithium ion battery I was unlikely to use for more than a month.  Lithium ion batteries need to be able to continually discharge a trickle of energy, if there is insufficient charge to allow them to do this then you will encounter problems in the Autumn.

Step four

Store the lightset in a cool place.  It is important to store your lightset in a cool, dry place whilst it is not in use, preferably inside the original packaging so it is properly protected.  Temperature is the single most important step for prologing the life of your battery and therefore your lightset.  The cooler the better, in fact the fridge is ideal, however your wife may not agree!  One word of warning your shed may be freezing in the winter but often they're a sun trap in the summer!

All of Magicshine UKs batteries are guaranteed for 12 months, however if you've splashed out and purchased an Open Light battery then you have the peace of mind, knowing you have a full two years warranty.  Following the guidlines above will also ensure a long life with minimal cell degredation, which will reduce your run time.
