The Magicshine MJ-900 bike light with a claimed 1200 theoretical lumens, using a Cree XM-L2 LED. This little light really is tiny, but does pack a punch for it's size. Magicshine have kept everything as small as possible including the battery especially for the road boys where weight is paramount. The MJ-900 comes with a 2.6Ah 7.4V battery as standard, weighing in at 130 grams it will make your commute a synch with very little extra weight to carry!

Dimensions

Newly designed with advanced cooling through the new thermally managed fins the Magicshine MJ-900 weighs just 55g plus the battery at 130g making a total of 185g with a run time of over 10 hours on the lowest setting!

Mounting

A newly shaped 'o' ring makes mounting this light head to your bars even simpler than before.  The battery reverts back to the velcro strap of old, but for such a small battery this works perfectly.

Battery

The MJ-900 comes with a tiny 2.6Ah battery as standard, perfect for keeping weight and costs down, however we do offer the option of increasng your run time by purchasing the bigger 4.4Ah or 6.6Ah batteries before the checkout.  The battery indicator for this light shows red once the battery is below 30% charge. Please note, it does not use the same system as our other lights by turning through the colour changes to indicate 75%, 50% and 25% useage.

In Use

The MJ-900 makes use of four power levels 100%, 50% 30% and a flashing mode.  These power options are chosen by pressing the button on top of the lighthead and each option is scrolled through including the off position before cycling back to 100%.

Run Time

The standard 2.6Ah 4.4V battery will give a maximum run time of 2.3hours on full power, with just over 4 hours on 50% power going right up to 10 hours on 30% of power output.  If you do require more rum time you can opt to purchase a bigger battery at the checkout.  The options include the 4.4Ah and 6.6Ah batteries from Magicshine.

Beam

The Magicshine MJ-900 has a beam angle of 20 degrees,  so slightly wider than the MJ-858, with a thoroughly decent beam throw that much higher priced lights would be envious of. A great little light for the road.

I bought this after a couple of magazine reviews. Bought for off road. I have only used it at Queen Elizabeth country park. I used it in the winter going out at 8 at night in pitch black. Had it helmet mounted and it was amazing. Used for going down red runs in the park with jumps and drops.

Have given 5 stars based on the price. I didn't have loads of money for a bike light and wasn't disappointed when I got this at all. Was great. The only time I felt I needed more light was when the speed gets quite fast down hill but to be expected considering the price. Its a amazing light with great light. Solid build quality. Would definitely recommend. (Posted on 27/06/2017)

    2. A great first light coupled with fantastic customer service Review by Matt

This is my first proper bike light so I don't have much to compare it against... I went for a Magic Shine MJ-900 as reviews for more expensive units in the range have been good but my budget was £50.
First impressions when it arrived were that it was well packaged with an easy to understand quick start guide. It appears to be well made with a nice alloy heat sink at the back of the unit. Its a shame the housing is plastic but i guess that's so they can hit such a low price point. I think the connector between the light and the battery is very good and looks really secure and watertight.
Charging the battery to full takes about an hour or so and the charger auto cuts out once the battery is full. Fitting the light to the bike is with the supplied O-Ring which is very robust if a little fiddly to get on and off but once its on it seams pretty secure. There is a Velcro strap to secure the battery and another one to secure the excess cable so its not flapping around.
The light has 4 modes - Full/Medium/Low/ Flash and the button to toggle the modes on top of the light is big and easy to use with gloves on. The button also doubles as the low battery indicator.
My commute to and from work is about 6 miles down unlit country lanes (about 30 mins each way) I've been using the Flash on the way to work in the daylight and Full beam in the evening on the way home. I'm getting about 3 journeys out of 1 charge.
When the battery is low then the indicator lights up. Its supposed to be at 30% but in reality i think it must be much lower than this as once the indicator has come on then shortly after the light will flash briefly then switch off. You then have to switch the light back and and set it on a lower power setting.
The light beam will light up the full width of a single lane road for about 15-20M... fine for commuting. I've not tried it off road yet but should be fine for my local loop which takes just over an hour. I can see me needing to pair it with a helmet light for this though.
All in all, a great first light if you're on a budget coupled with fantastic customer service from the guys at Magic Shine UK.
